Read Russia – Book Expo America: Genre Literature: Development, Confines and Stereotypes

Russian author Sergey Lukyanenko, perhaps best known for his famed "Night Watch" trilogy

A sci-fi writer Sergey Lukyanenko, an author of historical detective novels Dmitri Kosyrev (a.k.a. Master Chen) and a horror writer Anna Starobinets discuss the phenomenon and place of genres in Russian literary landscape. Read Russia – Book Expo America: In Conversation with Alexander Arkhangelski

Join the Dweck Center for the second day of their “Read Russia” event! Alexander Arkhangelsky, a journalist, writer, journalism professor, literary critic and blogger, discuss the current state of affairs in Russia. Program is in Russian. Registration is required. Read Russia – Book Expo America: Literary Matrix: Writers on Writers

Two years ago, many contemporary Russian writers were approached with a proposal to rewrite a chapter for high school literature handbooks. Each was given a choice of a classical Russian author. The result was a two-volume set “Literary Matrix”. Mikhail Shishkin (article of Goncharov), Andrey Rubanov (Shalamov), Sergey Shargunov (Griboedov) will be joined by Pavel Basinsky, an award-winning biographer of Tolstoy, and Alexander Genis, who himself, many years ago, took an alternative look on Russian classical literature in the book “Native Speech”, which he co-wrote together with Pyotr Vail. June 14 – MA

An example of Russia's Palekh style of painting

Join the Museum of Russian Icons in Boston for the opening of their new exhibition, Palekh Icons: The Enchantment of Russian Painting.  The exhibit opens June 14, with the event running from 4PM to 6PM. The exhibit runs until September 1, and features works from the private collection of Berlin, Germany art dealer and restorer, Thomas Mönius with paintings from the Museum’s collection, are showcased in this transformation of traditions.

June 16 – NY

Join the Dweck Center for their monthly installment in the Russian Literary Series!

Yuz Aleshkovsky is one of the most revered veterans of Russian literature. He has penned a score of novels which by now have become classics of contemporary Russian literature, but his best-known and most appreciated works are his anti-Stalinist songs, which have become part of an urban folk tradition in the Soviet Union and are even mistakenly considered by some to be anonymous. Yuz Aleshkovsky will answer questions and perform some of his old and new songs. This program is in Russian. Registration is required. For registration call 718-230-2222. The 14th International Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival is taking place in Boston on July 1st at 2:00 PM in the Agganis Arena at Boston University.

Taryn Jones graduated in 2008 from the University of Victoria (Canada) with her BA in history and anthropology. During that time, she also studied Russian and art history, and was heavily involved with the university’s Russian Studies course union. In January 2012, she will begin her studies at the University of British Columbia in a double Master’s program in library and archival science. Ideally, she would like to work in a gallery or museum’s library or archive. She has traveled throughout Russia on numerous occasions, and first studied in St Petersburg in 2007. In 2009, she traveled across the country, beginning at the Mongolian border and going westwards towards St Petersburg. In recent years, she has studied art history and museum studies in St Petersburg with SRAS. Most recently, she wrote articles for SRAS’s “Cheap Eats” feature and interned in the Youth Education Center of the State Hermitage, where she researched artists, edited English-language texts and translated Russian texts to English. Taryn’s specific artistic interests are the Wanderers, Socialist Realism and photography.
